Prince William Cuts Queen Camilla’s Relative from Royal Payroll

When the affair between then-Prince Charles and Camilla was made public, it sent shockwaves through the royal family and deeply affected Charles’ sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. Initially, their relationship with Camilla was strained, but over time, she earned their respect—particularly William’s.

However, a recent decision by Prince William might cause tension with Queen Camilla. Reports suggest that William has removed Camilla’s sister, Annabel Elliot, from the payroll after taking over the Duchy of Cornwall.

For two decades, Elliot, an interior designer, earned substantial income after being hired by King Charles in 2005 as the chief designer of his estates following his marriage to Camilla. According to the latest Duchy accounts, Elliot did not receive any payments for her services during the 2023-2024 fiscal year.

The 2024 Duchy of Cornwall report stated: “During the period to 8th September 2022, the Duchy paid Mrs. Annabel Elliot, the 24th Duke of Cornwall’s sister-in-law, in the normal course of business and on an arm’s length basis, £19,625 (or $25,091.25) for fees and commission, and £12,316 ($15,746.44) for the purchase of furniture, furnishings, and retail stock for the Duchy of Cornwall Holiday accommodation, Duchy offices, and Duchy Nursery. At 31st March 2024 there was £nil (2023: £nil) remaining payable to Mrs. Elliot in respect of these [services].”

Although Elliot has been removed from the Duchy payroll, she is not entirely out of royal projects. She was recently hired to oversee improvements at Balmoral’s visitor center and restaurant ahead of its public reopening this summer. According to the Palace, Elliot’s services will be utilized for future projects “where appropriate.”

Elliot has run her interior design and antiques business in Dorset for over 30 years and was ranked as one of the top female interior designers in the UK in 2014. In 2012, she transformed a run-down barn at Dumfries House in Scotland into an elegant guesthouse, becoming Charles’ go-to designer for various royal projects.

Public reactions to William’s decision have been mixed. Some people support the move, questioning why she was on the payroll in the first place, while others have praised her design work and suggested that she may be retiring at 75.

Elliot, who has been married to Simon Elliot since 1972, shares three children with him, including Ben Elliot, a businessman and former Co-Chairman of the Conservative Party. She remains extremely close to her sister, Queen Camilla.
