Lena had always believed that people showed their true character during difficult moments.
She just never expected to learn that lesson from her own husband.
For years, Kyle had described himself as someone who loved to joke around. His brothers, Brad and Chase, were exactly the same way. Whenever the three of them were together, there was usually some kind of prank, teasing, or recording happening.
Sometimes Lena laughed along.
Sometimes she rolled her eyes.
And sometimes she quietly wished they would grow up.
But she never imagined that one of their jokes would change the course of her life.
It happened on an ordinary afternoon during a long drive.
Lena, Kyle, Brad, and Chase had been traveling for several hours. The road seemed to stretch endlessly ahead of them, surrounded by dry land and occasional stretches of highway.
Kyle had been complaining about being tired.
“I need something with caffeine,” he said, glancing toward Lena. “Can you grab me an energy drink when we stop?”
“Sure,” she replied.
A short while later, they pulled into a small gas station.
It was the kind of place where there were only a few vehicles in the parking lot, a convenience store attached to the pumps, and miles of open road in every direction.
Lena climbed out of the truck.
“Want anything else?” she asked.
“No, just the drink.”
She smiled and headed inside.
She didn’t think twice about leaving her purse in the truck.
She didn’t take her wallet.
She didn’t take her water bottle.
She didn’t even think about carrying her phone because she expected to be inside for less than five minutes.
She walked through the doors, grabbed the drink, and waited at the counter.
It was completely normal.
Until she stepped outside.
The truck was gone.
For a moment, Lena simply stood there.
She looked toward the highway.
Nothing.
Then she noticed a vehicle several hundred feet away.
It was the truck.
“Kyle?”
Her voice was barely audible.
Then the vehicle accelerated.
Lena’s eyes widened.
“KYLE!”
She dropped the drink and started running.
The truck continued moving.
She waved both arms.
“Stop!”
Instead of stopping, the truck seemed to move faster.
Then she saw Brad leaning toward the window.
He was laughing.
Chase was beside him, holding up a phone.
They were recording her.
Lena couldn’t believe what she was seeing.
“Are you serious?” she shouted.
The truck kept moving.
Chase leaned out of the window just enough to yell something back.
“Good luck, Lena!”
Brad laughed.
Then the truck disappeared around a bend.
Lena stopped running.
She stood in the middle of the parking lot, breathing heavily, staring at the road.
At first, she expected the truck to come back.
Surely they would turn around.
Surely Kyle would realize that leaving his wife alone at a remote gas station was not funny.
Five minutes passed.
Then ten.
Then twenty.
Still nothing.
Lena walked back toward the gas station.
She checked the road again.
Nothing.
She tried calling Kyle.
The phone rang.
No answer.
She called again.
Still nothing.
Then she looked at her battery.
Two percent.
She felt her stomach tighten.
Her purse was gone.
Her wallet was gone.
Her identification was gone.
Her money was gone.
Her belongings were all in the truck.
For the first time, the seriousness of the situation began to sink in.
She walked inside the gas station and asked the employee if she could use a phone.
The employee looked surprised.
“Are you okay?”
“My husband drove away,” Lena explained. “He left me here by mistake.”
She couldn’t bring herself to say the truth yet.
She still wanted to believe it had been an accident.
The employee allowed her to make a call.
Kyle didn’t answer.
Neither did Brad.
Neither did Chase.
Lena returned outside.
The sun was getting lower, but the heat was still intense.
She sat on a bench near the entrance and waited.
Maybe Kyle would call.
Maybe he would turn around.
Maybe someone would come back.
Then, almost an hour later, her phone vibrated.
Lena immediately grabbed it.
A message from Kyle.
For a brief moment, she felt relieved.
Then she read it.
Don’t be mad. It’s just a prank. We’ll come back soon.
Lena stared at the screen.
She read the message again.
Then a third time.
She couldn’t understand how someone could type those words after what had just happened.
She replied.
Come back now.
There was no response.
She waited.
Nothing.
Then her screen went black.
The battery had died.
Lena sat there holding the phone in her hand.
She didn’t cry.
She didn’t scream.
She didn’t even feel angry anymore.
She simply felt empty.
That was when she began thinking about everything that had happened during her marriage.
The little jokes.
The embarrassing moments.
The times Kyle and his brothers had laughed at her discomfort.
The times she had told herself they were harmless.
The times Kyle had promised that he didn’t mean anything by it.
She suddenly realized something.
The problem wasn’t the prank.
The problem was that Kyle had known she would be frightened.
He had known she had no money.
He had known she had no transportation.
He had known she was hundreds of miles from home.
And he had still driven away.
For entertainment.
Lena looked across the parking lot.
An older woman had just arrived in a minivan.
She got out slowly and walked toward the gas pump.
Lena watched her for a few seconds.
Then she stood.
But what Lena decided after hearing those words would change the rest of her life…
