A tense wildlife encounter near Satara in Kruger National Park recently highlighted just how challenging life can be for African wild dogs raising young.
A pair of wild dogs was moving with a litter of 10 pups when the family encountered several predators along their route. What began as a routine relocation quickly became a difficult test for the adults as they tried to protect their young.
The sighting was filmed by wildlife enthusiast Liza Kruger of Kruger’s Wildlife Diary near Nkaya Pan, south of Satara. Her footage documented the movements of the family and the unexpected appearance of three male lions.
A Family on the Move
African wild dogs frequently move their den sites, particularly when they need to avoid predators or other dangers. Moving a litter, however, can be risky because the pups are still young and vulnerable.
In this case, two adult wild dogs were seen traveling along the H1-3 with their 10 pups. The weather was cold and wet, and the young animals were making plenty of noise as they followed the adults.
The parents appeared especially alert.
Two hyenas were reportedly following the family from a distance, which may have contributed to the adults’ cautious behavior. The wild dogs repeatedly looked around while keeping track of the pups.
For a family traveling through an area occupied by several predators, staying together was essential.
The Pups Move Into the Grass
As the adults became increasingly concerned about the hyenas, they temporarily left the litter to investigate the situation.
The pups responded instinctively by moving into the long grass along the roadside, where they could find some temporary cover.
When the adults returned, they appeared to change direction. One possibility was that they were attempting to return to their previous den site.
The decision may have been intended to provide the young animals with greater protection, but the journey soon took an unexpected turn.
Then the lion began moving toward the tiny pup… what happened next was a heartbreaking struggle for survival.
