A routine flight to one of Alaska’s most remote locations ended in tragedy on August 20 after a small charter aircraft crashed near the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site. All eight people aboard the aircraft were killed in the accident.

The flight was carrying two pilots and six passengers who were traveling to the remote installation for work. Among the passengers were two employees of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and four contractors.

What Happened During the Flight?

The aircraft was a twin-engine Cessna 441 that had departed from Anchorage earlier that morning.

According to preliminary information from the National Transportation Safety Board, the aircraft had already made one landing attempt and was preparing for a second approach when the crash occurred.

Weather conditions in the area were challenging at the time. Fog, low clouds and poor visibility made the approach particularly difficult, requiring the pilots to rely heavily on aircraft instruments.

The aircraft ultimately crashed west of the runway in mountainous, rising terrain.

Difficult Conditions Complicated the Response

The remote location presented significant challenges for both rescuers and investigators.

The wreckage was located approximately a quarter to a third of a mile west of the runway. A post-crash fire also occurred, and the aircraft was heavily damaged in the impact.

Rescue crews traveled to the area by helicopter and confirmed that there were no survivors.

Because Cape Newenham is located in an isolated part of western Alaska, investigators must work through difficult terrain and changing weather conditions while examining the crash site.

Investigation Is Underway

Officials have not determined what caused the accident.

Investigators are expected to examine several factors, including weather conditions, terrain, the aircraft’s mechanical condition, the approach to the runway and other circumstances surrounding the flight.
