Gilbert the Golden Retriever: The Dog Who Touched Hearts and Became a Symbol of Love and Comfort
Gilbert wasn’t your typical service dog. Originally trained by the organization Helping Paws, this golden retriever was full of energy, love, and an irresistible friendliness that made it hard for him to follow strict service dog protocols. Instead of being disappointed, those who met Gilbert quickly realized he had a different calling — one just as powerful.
Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman took Gilbert into her home as a cherished family pet. With his calm presence and joyful spirit, Gilbert became more than just a dog — he was a source of comfort during difficult times, including the pandemic and periods of social unrest. Whether showing up in Zoom meetings or curling up next to family members, Gilbert’s loving nature left a lasting impression on everyone around him.
Tragically, on June 14, Gilbert was injured in the same heartbreaking incident that took the lives of Rep. Hortman and her husband. Surrounded by love until the very end, Gilbert was peacefully laid to rest by the couple’s adult children.
In honor of Gilbert’s memory and the Hortman family’s legacy, Helping Paws launched a special fund to support the pairing of service dogs with veterans and first responders living with PTSD. Gilbert may not have worn the official vest of a service dog, but his impact was undeniable. He was a true hero in his own right — bringing light, healing, and love wherever he went.
