He hesitated. “Do you want to accept it?”
Lupita sighed. “I don’t know. The money would change my family’s life. My mother could stop working nights, and my brother could focus on his studies. But leaving Mateo…” She paused, her eyes softening. “He means so much to me.”
“You mean a lot to him, too,” Alejandro replied. “But tell me—are you happy working here?”
“I’m very happy,” she answered truthfully. “I’ve learned so much, especially with the physical therapy course you’re supporting.”
“And how do you think Mateo would feel if you left?”
“He’d be heartbroken,” Lupita said. “He’s been talking about the day he’ll finally run without crutches.”
Alejandro nodded thoughtfully. “Then maybe I can make a counteroffer.”
An Offer That Came From the Heart
When she heard his proposal—to match the new salary and include health insurance for her entire family—Lupita was overwhelmed.
“Mr. Alejandro, you don’t have to do that,” she whispered.
“Yes, I do,” he said. “You’ve done more than care for my son—you’ve helped bring our family back together. That’s priceless.”
Tears welled in her eyes. “Then I’ll stay,” she said. “I’ll stay as long as you’ll have me.”

“You did it, Aunt Lupita!” Mateo said at the inauguration.

Not long after, Alejandro received a call from the very businessman who once tried to hire Lupita away.
“My grandson is a patient at your center,” he said. “His progress has been extraordinary. I owe you an apology for not seeing her potential back then.”
