During the interview, Patel noted longstanding public concerns about the FBI’s role in politically sensitive matters. Patel argued that decisions made at the time blurred the lines between the responsibilities of the FBI and those of the Department of Justice.
Patel explained, “The FBI does not make prosecution decisions—that authority belongs to the Department of Justice and the Attorney General. Agents and analysts do important work, but the final call on prosecutions rests with our partners at DOJ.” He emphasized that restoring these boundaries is essential for rebuilding public trust.
He also discussed concerns surrounding the previous Crossfire Hurricane investigation into Donald Trump’s alleged ties to Russia. According to Patel, past leadership failed to meet standards of transparency and accuracy. He expressed his belief that the agency must address those issues to regain credibility, saying, “We are committed to correcting past mistakes, and you will soon see a renewed focus on openness and integrity.”
Patel assured viewers that steps are already underway to increase accountability, adding, “The FBI has historically been regarded as one of the world’s premier law-enforcement organizations. We intend to restore that confidence.”
This interview follows earlier testimony from Patel during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, where he discussed decision-making processes related to the security preparations surrounding the events of January 6th. Speaking with Sen. Ted Cruz, Patel highlighted the coordination required between federal agencies and local authorities, noting the formal processes needed before resources like the National Guard can be deployed.
