A relaxing walk along the beach can sometimes turn into an unforgettable encounter with nature and that’s exactly what happened to wildlife photographer Brianna Varner.
While visiting Pass-a-Grille Beach with her boyfriend after a stretch of stormy weather, Varner expected to find interesting shells and debris washed ashore. What she didn’t expect was a rare and fascinating moment that would stay with her forever.
At first, Varner spotted what looked like a simple leaf lying in the sand. Curious, she picked it up but quickly realized something about it felt unusual.
“It had a strange shape,” she explained, recalling the moment she paused to take a closer look.
What Is a “Mermaid’s Purse”?
After examining it more carefully, Varner recognized that the object wasn’t a leaf at all. It was a “mermaid’s purse,” a term commonly used to describe the egg cases of certain marine animals like sharks, rays, and skates.
These protective casings are laid underwater and often attached to rocks or seaweed, where they remain safe until the baby inside is ready to hatch. By the time they wash up on shore, most are empty making what happened next even more surprising.
A Hidden Life Inside
Curious, Varner held the case up to the sunlight and to her amazement, she spotted a tiny embryo inside.
Realizing the developing creature could dry out if left exposed, she carefully placed the egg case into a nearby tide pool, giving it a better chance of survival. As she continued walking along the shore, she discovered several more and did the same for each one.
But one particular case stood out.
Unlike the others, this one felt firmer and didn’t let any light pass through. As Varner carried it toward the water, she noticed something unexpected movement.
A Once-in-a-Lifetime Moment
Within moments, the situation became even more extraordinary.
As she looked down, she saw a tiny face forming inside. Then, right before her eyes, the baby animal began to emerge from the egg case.
In just seconds, the small sea creature fully hatched.
“It was such a surprising moment,” Varner shared. “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.”
To help it safely begin its journey, she gently carried the newborn into slightly deeper water, away from the rough shoreline.
Back Into the Ocean
Once released, the tiny animal instinctively settled onto the sandy ocean floor exactly what it needed to do to stay safe.
After doing some research later, Varner identified the newborn as a clearnose skate, a species known for laying eggs in these distinctive cases.
The experience left her both amazed and grateful to have witnessed such a rare moment in nature.
A Simple Reminder for Beachgoers
This encounter highlights an important lesson: not everything on the beach is just debris. Some items may be part of delicate ecosystems or even living organisms.
Taking a moment to observe and understand what you find can make a meaningful difference and sometimes, it can lead to an unforgettable experience.
