La Salle University, where Bryant once made his mark both as a player and later as a coach, shared a heartfelt statement remembering him as “a cherished part of the Explorer community who will forever hold a special place in our hearts.” Head coach Fran Dunphy revealed that Bryant had recently suffered a major stroke before his passing.
This tragedy follows the devastating loss of Kobe Bryant in a helicopter crash in January 2020 — a moment that shook the entire sports world. Since then, Joe Bryant had largely stayed out of the public eye, quietly honoring his son’s legacy. Kobe had often expressed deep gratitude for his father’s influence, saying that Joe taught him “how to analyze, train for, and perform in the game of basketball” from a young age.
Joe Bryant’s own basketball career was remarkable. During his time at La Salle University, he averaged an impressive 20.8 points per game, earning recognition as one of the school’s standout athletes. Selected by the Golden State Warriors in the 1975 NBA Draft, he went on to play for the Philadelphia 76ers and several other teams throughout his professional career.
The 76ers paid tribute to him in a statement, calling him “a true Philadelphia basketball treasure.” Former players and colleagues have also shared emotional tributes. Doug Young, once a teammate of Kobe’s, remembered Joe as an “inspiration” who brought joy and passion to the game, encouraging everyone around him to reach their full potential.
Beyond his playing career, Joe Bryant dedicated himself to coaching, mentoring athletes at all levels — including in the WNBA, where he led the Los Angeles Sparks.
Arn Tellem, Kobe Bryant’s longtime agent and family friend, described Joe as “a genuine Philadelphia hoops pioneer whose warmth and kindness touched everyone he met.”
